A Few Needed Repairs

LSU Agcenter reached out to us for maintenance on two gazebos on the Botanic Gardens property. Both were in need of new shakes for the roofing and one located by a lake was having a structural issue that needed to be taken care of.

Cedar Shake Roofing

The cedar shakes varied in sizes. Lengths consistent at 24″, thickness 1/2″ – 3/4″, and widths roughly 4″ – 12″. The first course installed was doubled. Most of original 6″ spaced treated sheathing slats were still in good condition which we fastened the shakes to with about two nails per shake. A few rotten slat pieces were replaced. The shakes were installed at 10″ exposure with spacing between 1/4″ – 3/8″ each.

Sunken Post

The corner post was smashed down by a fallen tree. A previous contractor made a temporary repair to level the roof by jacking the structure and placing support blocks on the top of the post.

Sunken Deck

The roof was jacked up and blocks were placed on top of the post. It leveled the roof out but left the same corner of the deck sunken in.

Raising The Roof

We lifted the framing with a lift. This allowed us to place concrete footings under the post.

Footings

While the structure was lifted on the corner post, we placed a standard deck block and a thick paver under the post.

Leveled Out Both Ways

The deck was set level while adjusting the footings.

Post Reset

The original post was preserved and the roof structure and deck were reset level.
