Fixing Up A Rotten Balcony
A balcony is exposed to the elements at all times. This one had seen its days and was rotting on the edges. It’s is important for a deck like this to slope toward the edge 1/8″ – 1/4″ for water to flow off, which this balcony had going for it. Unfortunately, the water would sit on the wood edge until it dried and rot occurred over time. The homeowner decided to go with a modern 12×24 porcelain tile as well as some new irons rails.
The Prep Work
We tore out the old wood decking and cleaned and swept up. We removed the old flashing on the edge that wasn’t doing its job of deflecting water from the siding. Then we installed Wonderboard fiber cement backerboard for the tile.
Schluter-Ditra is a uncoupling membrane product which helps to prevent water leaking onto the plywood subfloor and tile cracks. The seams are joined together with Schluter Kerdi-Band with thin-set in similar fashion that joint compound is applied under paper tape when drywalling.
